  • Nelson sitting pretty on a triple

first_img FIRST SUPER-6 FANCIES (1) SHE’S A MANEATER (2) FEDORA/ LIKE A LADY (3) SURE MAN/ XQUISITE CHOICE (4) SILVER SURF/ IDON”TKNOW (5) ORIGINAL TRAIN/ MIND SET (6) JON MARSHALL/ SMASH AMUSEMENT Any of the abovementioned horses could win, but the one best equipped must be FEDORA, who signalled her return to form when finishing less than a length third to SIMPLY THE BEST and KING D in the fast-run War Zone Sprint on December 24. The daughter of Nuclear Wayne – Patty Girl was running on strongly at the finish and should score an overdue win with Nelson having secured the ride. Nelson should also win the third race (claiming $250,000 – $210,000) over 1400 metres aboard SURE MAN, who finished a close third to SHE’S PLUMMY and XQUISITE CHOICE over 1700 metres on January 14. Installed a form even money favourite then, SURE MAN looked all over the winner when 2-1/2 lengths clear a furlong out, only to be gobbled up by the first two in the closing stages. Given the shorter distance and Nelson sticking with the ride, SURE MAN gets the vote over old rival XQUISITE CHOICE, CHEERS and STAN BOY in a field of 10. The fourth race, again over 1400 metres but for maiden five-year-olds and up, should provide the Conroy Tulloch-trained SILVER SURF with his maiden victory. The 5-y-o grey horse beat several of the present opposition when finishing a clear second to GOODOL’UNCLELINKS on December 17 and gets the nod over IDON’TKNOW and CONNOR in a 13-horse field. The last two races in the first Super-6 should be won by ORIGINAL TRAIN (Nelson up) and the steadily improving JON MARSHALL with in-form Jevanne Erwin riding for Wayne DaCosta. The Pick-9 had no takers at Caymanas Park on Wednesday resulting in a carryover of $$3.8 million into tomorrow’s meet. Both Super-6s were caught despite a 31-1 upset by LAZZA in the closing race over the straight, the late Super-6 cornered by a lucky punter, who walked away with a cool million. The Pick-9 will embrace races three to 11 on the card, the first Super-6 from race one to six, the twilight Super-6 from race six to 11. We look at the first Super-6 which provides punters with a “free” winner in the opening race over 1400 metres for native bred three-year-olds, this in the form of SHE’S A MANEATER, to be ridden by newly crowned champion Omar Walker for 16-time champion Wayne DaCosta and owner Winston Kong. The speedy bay filly won her first three races as a two-year-old, slamming SOTOMAYOR by 5-3/4 lengths over this trip in the $3.6 million Pick-3 Super Challenge Trophy on November 26. Although narrowly beaten by the grey SOTOMAYOR in the $4.25 million Supreme Ventures Jamaica 2-Y-O Stakes over a mile last Boxing Day, SHES A MANEATER has looked her old self at exercise, turning in bullet works after bullet works and now reverting to this shorter trip, cannot be opposed in a seven-horse field. Next on the programme is a competitive looking restricted allowance race over 1100 metres in which most of the eight horses declared (all four-year-olds) are coming to run, so to speak. They include top contenders FEDORA to be ridden by three-time champion Dane Nelson for trainer Richard Azan, the recent course winner LIKE A LADY, as well as SUNDANCE, GOLD MINER and MR. BONES, who will be closing rapidly from off the pace. OVERDUE WINlast_img read more
