first_imgMirabai Chanu has been a world champion and won the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games 2018 (CWG) at Gold Coast, which was a first yellow metal for India in the event this year.Chanu’s best lift in Snatch was 86kg while in Clean and Jerk, she lifted a best of 110kg and bagged the gold medal with a total of 196kg. Chanu was a class apart in Gold Coast but there was a journey Chanu made in order to achieve that high this year. She converted her 2014 Commonwealth Games silver into a gold four years later but had a big roadblock in the middle at Rio Olympics 2016, something that she had work hard to overcome.”I first won silver at the Commonwealth Games 2014 and then I started knowing how and what to do to get better. I worked extremely hard and qualified for the Olympics but then it was my first Olympics and I got really nervous because of which I missed out on a medal.”I got very disappointed and really low at that point but then my mother and my coach, they explained me a lot and then corrected my technique and worked even harder. Because of all that I could go back to CWG and win a gold medal,” Chanu told indiatoday.in.Chanu spoke at length about the mental aspect of a sport like weightlifting and conceded that she felt the need to take help from a sports psychologist in order to overcome the nerves and low of the Olympics.advertisementShe had worked extremely hard for the Olympics, qualified for the event and then let her nerves get the better of her. That is what Chanu said she avoids now and credited the sessions she had with the psychologist for the same.”Earlier I didn’t know much about it [sports psychology] but then I did take help and the difference showed in my performance. I could focus more on my training and technique as well and things got a lot better. I had sessions and all, talked about various things and my performance got better too,” Chanu elaborated.”It’s upto every player as to how they go about a psychologist. You know how we maintain our power and how we work on the various aspects of the sport, we have to consult a psychologist regularly for that.”Chanu went on to say that a psychologist may even make a weightlifter feel more powerful during a performance, courtesy the mental aspect of the sport that had been worked upon.”The mentality in weightlifting is very important and it can get problematic if we don’t work on it along with working on the sport. When we go to lift a weight and if that time we are thinking about something else or are under pressure, we fail. So working on the mental part is extremely important.”Chanu shared a little about her journey from a small place in Manipur to the world stage, where she has been a bright star for India. Chanu said she felt lucky to have a family who is very fond of sports.”I come from a very small place in Manipur and initially I didn’t even know what weightlifting but then seeing people I got inspired. Also, I am very lucky that my family is very fond of sports and I received a lot of support. Then I started practicing and got into it and this is all my hard work. I would keep working hard till I achieve what I want to.”Chanu said she focusses on smaller aims and takes one tournament at a time. She had the Asian Championships coming up next and had all her focus on that.”I’m working more and more on my technique. I want to be better than what I am and for that, my focus lies with bettering my craft.”Also Read | Mirabai Chanu’s parents overwhelmed by their daughter’s successSee Photos | Mirabai Chanu, Virat Kohli receive Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna AwardAlso Watch | Exclusive: Hima Das keen to inspire Gen Nextlast_img read more
