  • Water polo: Agoura in consolation bracket

first_imgAgoura came in with high hopes for a good showing in the inaugural Masters tournament, but a letdown was inevitable after Monday’s emotional victory in the Div. II final, according to coach Jason Rosenthal. Instead, Rosenthal placed the emphasis on making the tournament a joyous farewell for the Chargers’ eight seniors. There were few tears shed after Friday’s loss, with the players looking forward to a team dinner later that evening. “In terms of preparation, we wanted to have fun,” Rosenthal said. “It was the last time that the seniors would play together as a team.” Agoura looked sharp in its victory over El Segundo, as Casey Flacks scored four goals and Emily Schmachtenberger and Jillian Waldron each scored three. Agoura struggled, though, against Div. I semifinalist Newport Harbor, a team the Chargers defeated 9-6 in the Irvine Tournament in February. IRVINE – There won’t be much more at stake than pride when the Agoura High girls’ water polo team meets Santa Barbara in a rematch of the Southern Section Div. II championship match at the Masters tournament today at William Woollett Aquatics Center at 11:30. a.m. Both teams were eliminated from championship contention after losses on the first day of the inaugural 16-team tournament and will be relegated to the fifth-place bracket. Fourth-seeded Agoura (27-7), which rallied for an 11-10 win over Santa Barbara in the waning seconds of the Div. II final on Monday, lost to No. 5 Newport Harbor, 8-4, in the quarterfinals on Friday after a 16-2 first-round win over El Segundo. Santa Barbara (26-8) lost to top-seeded Foothill, 7-5, in the quarterfinals. center_img Newport Harbor scored four consecutive goals to overcome a 1-0 first-quarter deficit and take a 4-1 lead in the third period. “Of course, we wanted to go all the way and tried to do our best, but we just couldn’t get a hold of the win,” Schmachtenberger said. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
