  • Kirchner asked to show commitment to press freedom after supporters attack journalists

first_img May 15, 2003 – Updated on January 20, 2016 Kirchner asked to show commitment to press freedom after supporters attack journalists ArgentinaAmericas News Reporters Without Borders today voiced concern about physical attacks against TV crews by supporters of presidential candidates Carlos Menem and Néstor Kirchner in two separate incidents in the past few days and called on Kirchner, now president-elect, to show a commitment to press freedom.”These attacks by supporters of presidential candidates are absolutely scandalous,” Reporters Without Borders said. “We hope that Kirchner’s first decision as president will be to demonstrate his commitment to press freedom by ensuring that those responsible are punished, starting with his own supporters.”Canal 9 reporter Marcelo López Masía and his cameraman were attacked by supporters of Kirchner on the evening of 10 May when López tried to ask him about a transfer of Santa Cruz province public funds to a foreign bank account while he was the province’s governor. Kirchner refused to answer, and a few seconds later those accompanying him hit the TV reporter and his cameraman and destroyed part of their material. Kirchner did not try to stop them.Menem supporters roughed up América 2 reporter Marcelo López and his cameraman and damaged their equipment in La Rioja on 14 May while they were outside the mansion of the provincial governor, Angél Mazza, where Menem had gone to decide whether or not to participate in the presidential run-off. The police then made them leave. (Coincidentally, the reporters in the two incidents have almost identical names.)This was not the first time that supporters of Menem, who has been accused in several cases of corruption and tax fraud, were quick to react with the press. According to the Argentine press freedom organisation Periodistas, Menem’s security staff and supporters attacked journalists who were doing their job seven times in 2002. In a press statement the Ginnie Mae insured investors that:During a lapse in government funding, Ginnie Mae will reduce staffing to essential personnel levels. Importantly, Ginnie Mae will continue to remit timely payment of principal and interest to investors. There will also be no disruption of essential functions like the granting of commitment authority and support for continued issuance of Ginnie Mae-guaranteed Mortgage Backed Securities (MBS) and REMICs.Many are looking to the 2013 shutdown for guidance. But the fundamental changes to the industry in the past five years may mean we are in unknown territory. To learn the full impacts of a prolonged shutdown, the 2013 shutdown, which lasted 16 days, can be a guide, however other changes in the market will impact the total cost of the current shutdown.“In the past decade, government involvement in the housing industry has precipitously increased, hastening an even greater dependence on the federal institutions that would be affected by a potential government shutdown,” said Five Star Institute President and CEO Ed Delgado. “I call on all congressional stakeholders to stop using the needs of American homeowners as leverage for achieving their policy goals.”The Senate is scheduled to vote at noon today on a resolution that if passed would extend the budget until February 8. • Law students take Hague Convention case to trial

first_imgOn Jan. 28, Harvard Legal Aid Bureau (HLAB) student attorneys Nicholas Pastan ’15 and Breana Ware ’14 found themselves conducting a trial in federal court and asking a judge to decline to enforce a petition brought against their client pursuant to the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. In a one-day trial in the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, the students helped their client testify about the years of sexual and emotional abuse she and her children suffered. They fled in mid-September 2013, when they walked across the Canadian border to the United States.Although Pastan and Ware knew from the beginning that this case was not the typical HLAB case, they never imagined that they would find themselves in a federal courtroom only 12 weeks after signing on as the client’s student attorneys. In early December, Pastan and Ware received notice from the U.S. State Department that the children’s father had filed a petition pursuant to the Hague Convention in Federal District Court in Massachusetts. “We realized that under the Hague Convention, the case had to go to trial in no more than six weeks,” Pastan said. “That’s the amazing thing about HLAB; the second we looked back and said we wanted to represent this woman the whole organization got on board to help.” Read Full Storylast_img read more

  • Organized Crime Worth $870 Billion Worldwide

first_imgBy Dialogo October 17, 2012 It is important that in the assessment of the Executive Director of the UNODC it is added the damage to the environment caused by criminals of drug trafficking with supplies such as precursors and other chemicals to process drugs. In addition, also calculate the costs for damage to the environment caused by chemicals utilized by the authorities to destroy the crops, and the costs in human lives to combat, control and penalize the criminals of drug trafficking, together with the costs involved to assist in prevention and care to consumers. All of this surely exceeds the amount of two billion dollars. This is the result in the world without the fear of God. International organized crime is worth $870 billion, the head of the UN’s Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said on October 15, urging greater coordination in fighting it. “We are able to quantify the cost of transnational organized crime,” UNODC executive director Yury Fedotov told a crime conference in Vienna. “But we cannot calculate the misery and suffering caused to millions of people by these illicit activities,” he added. The perpetrators are “smart, sophisticated and largely opportunistic,” he said, calling for better international cooperation to tackle highly mobile organized crime groups. Some 800 ministers and civil society representatives are attending the week-long conference on transnational crime in the Austrian capital.last_img read more
