  • Barway Collins’ Father To Get 40 Years in Jail

first_imgA Liberian father, whose ten year old son’s lifeless body was found in the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, United States, has pleaded guilty to intentionally murdering his son for U$70, 000 insurance money, according to a report in Minneapolis (MN) based KAREll.com.Pierre Collins who has since been accused in the death of his 10-year-old son, Barway Collins and subsequently indicted by a grand jury on charges of first degree murder, entered a guilty plea Monday to second-degree intentional murder. As part of his plea, he has already agreed to 40 years in prison, KARE ll.com reported. The body of Barway Collins was found from the Mississippi River on April 11; his feet were bound with duct tape, and there was also tape found on his body. This was after he had gone missing for over three weeks.According to report, the late Barway was last spotted leaving a bus after school.Since the discovery, which came after a massive search, authorities and ordinary people have always suspected foul play in Barway’s death and the boy’s death was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner’s office though they say he was killed by “unspecified means.”Little Barway’s biological mother, who was in Liberia at the time of his death and was very devastated about the incident, has tearfully welcomed the news and indicated that she is now relieved. Louise is anxious to know whether anyone helped Pierre in the act, and if so, that person too, should be brought to book.“I just want justice for my son,” KARE11 quoted Louise as saying.Investigators say Collins killed his son in order to collect the life insurance money. An investigation revealed Collins was in huge debt and believed this was his only way out, KARE ll said. The report further indicates that Collins had two life insurance policies on Barway, totaling $50,000. Two days before his son was last seen, Collins allegedly made a payment on that life insurance policy and called the company, asking about raising the amount of coverage to $20,000 more. Cell phone records place Collins at the river on the day his son disappeared, near the area where his son’s body was eventually found. The president of a foundation and advocacy group, which lobbied to ensure that Barway’s mother-Louise Karluah was transported to the US to attend her son’s final funeral rites, Emma Smith noted that the plea is a victory for Barway and his mother, Louise. She termed the plea as a success story.“Justice has shown its rightful face and I want to praise God for Louise,” Smith, a young, elegant, purposeful and a love for humanity oriented female said. She was in an exciting mood when she heard the news. “I’m lack of words and don’t even know what to say. Praise God that our prayers have been answered,” she said.Ms. Smith, a musician and social activist, along with other Liberian women, including Cllr. Yvette Chesson Wureh, were in the forefront in ensuring that Louise, a semi-literate woman, got to the US and be part of the search for her son’s killer. She also expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the US Embassy, and Concern Women Liberia for their roles in the advocacy.“I want to be grateful to God for this news. This is indeed a victory for humanity, those of our friends in the US who have been consistently part of this justice seeking initiative and we (Liberian women) on this side that rallied behind Louise to ensure that she got due recognition,” Smith told the Daily Observer in a telephone interview yesterday. She lauded all those who were involved in the process of bringing Pierre to face the consequences of his action. “Pierre is heartless. He is going to pay dearly for taking the life of an innocent child,” she said.Emma Smith is now hoping that Louise will get some benefits in order to educate herself and improve her life. Many, especially Liberians in the US have said that Pierre has not been fair and not been trustworthy. They believe that Pierre Collins is leaving out important parts of the story, and they insist that there is more that needs to be made public.Pierre Collins has a record of abusing children, including Louise Karluah, the mother of his deceased son. He impregnated Louise at the age of fifteen while she was his student in a Refugee Camp in Ghana. A horrible tale, according to her, she has been living with. Pierre has also been caught in improper acts with his own children.County of Hennepin child protection services filed a petition to terminate his parental rights to his one-year-old son because of his track record of abusing his kids.KAREll revealed findings from a two year investigation by the county into abuse allegations of his children, with family court records showing his then-wife Jennifer Lynn Collins, filed for an order of protection, claiming that Collins inappropriately kissed his 11-year-old daughter and “slapped” his other son in the face leaving a “huge red welt.” Six months later Collins was accused of sexually assaulting a third child. He at the time denied any wrong-doing and was never criminally charged, but agreed to an “Order for Protection” that banned him from the home, his children’s schools and allowed only “supervised” visitations.
