  • Young Persons with Disabilities Included in NYS Summer Programme

first_imgYoung persons with disabilities are participating in a two-day orientation session of the National Youth Service (NYS) Summer Programme 2013, at the VH Percy Centre, 10-12 Osbourne Road, in Kingston. The sessions, which ended on Wednesday, July 3, are aimed at equipping young persons between 17 and 24 years of age with values and strong work ethics.Areas to be explored include Workplace Communications, Rights and Responsibilities of the Employer, Exceptional Customer Service, Professionalism in the Workplace, Volunteerism, Career Development and Effective Leadership. Participants will be placed with public and private sector organisations for a three-week internship period in July/August, following their orientation.Minister of Youth and Culture, Hon. Lisa Hanna, told JIS News that the decision to include youth with disabilities emerged from a meeting she held with them last November.“I wanted to find out what was important to them and they spoke to me about job opportunities,” Miss Hanna said, adding that she was impressed with the group of young persons, some of whom had successfully completed their studies, despite having multiple disabilities.“We felt that the National Youth Service should also incorporate and give access to persons with disabilities, and so this year, in all our programmes we have reserved spaces for people with disabilities to have the same internships, and the same kinds of opportunities like other young people,” she said.In her presentation in the recent Sectoral Debate, Minister Hanna said that during the 2013/2014 financial year, the NYS will have an intake of 4,000 young persons, with 375 being youth with disabilities. The Minister pointed out that the youth will be placed in different entities, depending on the nature of their disabilities.Mikhaila Rhone, one of several disabled persons at the session, said the programme will assist her to be more confident. “The fact that I am here means that I have the potential and I can do it, so I am very happy to be a part of the programme,” she added.Miss Rhone said that she will be encouraging other young persons to send in their applications. “I will be encouraging them to apply, and I will let them know that they (NYS) do not discriminate and they will be greeted and welcomed,” she said.Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, Miss Rhone is advising other young persons to pursue their goals and to not give up.Contact: E. • Exiting grand chief in Alberta vows to keep fighting for MMIW

first_imgBrandi MorinAPTN National NewsConfederacy of Treaty 6 Grand Chief Bernice Martial says she will continue to be a strong advocate for missing and murdered Indigenous women as her nine-month tenure as grand chief comes to an end in a couple weeks.Martial was the first ever female elected to the position of chief in the Treaty 6 confederacy. She was elected into the interim position last fall taking the place that was previously filled by the now Assembly of First Nations regional Grand Chief Craig Mackinaw. Martial said her role as grand chief is rotated yearly throughout the tribal chief members.A few months into serving as grand chief, Martial made national headlines when she called for the resignation of Aboriginal Affairs Minister Bernard Valcourt for placing the blame of MMIW on Indigenous men. Valcourt’s statement was then backed by a report released by the RCMP that was met with much controversy when it appeared to link violence against Indigenous women to their male counterparts.“I don’t buy that,” said Martial. “That 70 percent is still not accurate.”Martial then called for an independent investigator to review the RCMP’s data in April. She is still pressing for it to happen.Even though she will no longer be a grand chief she will continue to use her voice working as chief of her home community, Cold Lake First Nation“When I start something I don’t quit. I will advocate for them (MMIW) no matter how long it takes,” she said.Martial has been in leadership on and off for almost three decades, first as a councillor and then elected chief of Cold Lake in 2013.Last fall, she was surprised to learn Treaty 6 Chiefs had chosen her to lead the organization.“I showed up for a meeting and a chief told me to take the position,” she said. “I felt so good, I just felt like doing a victory dance. I hope it leads to other women to be in this position in the future.”She encourages more women to seek leadership roles and said women are natural nurturers who bring a needed aspect to the table of the usually male dominated setting. She added that being a chief is something that takes a lot of hard work, patience and tolerance. But the other male chiefs have treated her well and gave her an equal voice, she said.Going forward Martial will also be focusing on bettering her community.“My vision is, there’s always a better tomorrow. There’s so much opportunities left and I think about the children yet to come,” she [email protected]last_img read more
