  • Thieves rob pensioner of sheep

first_imgA De Kinderen, West Coast Demerara (WCD) pensioner is left counting her losses after she was robbed of the source of her livelihood – several sheep on Monday night. The 67-year-old woman made the startling discovery on Tuesday morning when she attempted to attend to her sheep that were secured in a pen in her backyard.According to the woman, at about 18:00hrs she secured the sheep but retired to bed just before midnight. However, the following morning she journeyed to the back of her house to take her sheep to graze but noticed that the door to the pen was opened. The woman told Guyana Times that she quickly inspected and found all of her sheep missing.“I was left dumbstruck and I immediately became frightened because I live alone and what if whoever came in here had attacked me?” the frightened woman questioned.“I think is somebody who know me came in here and steal my sheep…this is all I have, I dedicate my life to this, spend my last dollar behind them and now all of them gone, who would do something like that to an old woman like me?” the woman cried. The woman’s neighbour said that at about 02:00hrs she heard a commotion and the sheep making noise. The woman revealed that she inspected but saw nothing and as such, she returned to bed.The woman lamented her anger over the situation and called on the Police to assist the elderly woman and to properly investigate the matter.“Is sheep, is not like they will be hard to find because it has to be somebody right around here that had the guts to do this because they know that this old lady lives alone,” the neighbour said.A report was made at the Leonora Police Station and the Police is said to be investigating.last_img read more

  • Donegal cancer group express shock at women’s waiting list

first_imgDonegal Action for Cancer Care has expressed its shocked at learning that a total of 1783 Donegal women are waiting to be seen at Letterkenny Hospital. The group said the situation is “just not good enough.”DACC has since contacted Mr Sean Murphy General Manager Letterkenny Hospital & to the CEO of the Saolta University Hospital Group. Their correspondence has also been sent to Minister for Health Simon Harris TD.The group said they must acknowledge the quick response of all.Below is an update on the Gynae Service at Letterkenny Hospital and the breakdown of the waiting list as we had requested.Spokesperson Betty Holmes said “It is important that we DACC share this information. It is important to note that the hospital has commenced the process of recruiting a fifth Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and it is anticipated that this post will be advertised in the coming weeks.” Below is a reply from Mr Sean Murphy General Manager LUH received by DACC.Letterkenny University Hospital has seen its gynaecology waiting list rise over the last 5 years, in line with the increase nationally. If a person is waiting for an outpatient appointment to see a gynaecologist, this could be for a number of reasons, such as investigation or treatment of pelvic pain, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, menopause, infertility, polycystic ovarian disease, etc.Letterkenny University Hospital regrets that any patient should experience long waiting times to access an outpatient appointment. Hospital management and the gynaecology team have been working to reduce the length of time women wait to be seen in the gynaecology service and most importantly, ensure that high risk referrals are seen promptly. In 2018 the hospital commenced a dedicated Post Menopausal Bleeding Clinic. This clinic is additional to the normal Gynaecology Clinics and was developed to target women with symptoms that may indicate a risk of endometrial cancer. Since its commencement 164 women have been seen in this clinic, including all those patients on the waiting list with post menopausal bleeding symptoms prior to the clinic starting. Given that post menopausal bleeding is a clinically established risk indicator for endometrial cancer, this specialist clinic has been set up to provide GPs with urgent access for patient with these symptoms. The waiting time to be seen in the clinic is 2 to 4 weeks to ensure that women receive a prompt diagnosis.Other actions underway to address the waiting list include:· Letterkenny University Hospital has commenced the process of recruiting a fifth Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and it is anticipated that this post will be advertised in the coming weeks.· The hospital is also working with the National Treatment Purchase Fund to secure funding for additional Gynaecology Clinics to reduce the number of patients waiting over 15 months. · In July, the hospital introduced a text reminder service for Gynaecology Outpatient appointments to assist in reducing the number of patients who fail to attend their appointment. An average 6 patients fail to attend the each of the Gynaecology Clinics, which has an impact on the waiting list.Donegal cancer group express shock at women’s waiting list was last modified: August 20th, 2019 by Staff WriterShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

first_imgBournemouth manager Eddie Howe: Let’s keep perspectiveby Paul Vegas6 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveBournemouth manager Eddie Howe says they shouldn’t get down after their 0-0 draw with Norwich City.A share of the spoils saw the Cherries climb a place to ninth in the Premier League, joining Tottenham, Burnley and West Ham on 12 points.“Sometimes, you have to have the bigger picture in the back of your mind,” said Howe. “It wasn’t the three points we wanted but it wasn’t a defeat.“People will see we’re playing Norwich at home and the expectations are for it to be a home win. I understand that and that’s certainly our expectations as well.“But these games are never that easy and we fully respect Norwich, their manager, their players and the way they play. They are a tough nut to crack and they were for us today.”Howe added: “For me, the past two games defensively have been a big improvement. We were relatively okay from the defensive side at Arsenal and today we were strong again.“Aaron Ramsdale made one big save and, apart from that, he didn’t have too much to do. The disappointing thing is that their goalkeeper wasn’t overly worked and, with the quality we had on the pitch, that was the disappointment.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

  • Young Persons with Disabilities Included in NYS Summer Programme

first_imgYoung persons with disabilities are participating in a two-day orientation session of the National Youth Service (NYS) Summer Programme 2013, at the VH Percy Centre, 10-12 Osbourne Road, in Kingston. The sessions, which ended on Wednesday, July 3, are aimed at equipping young persons between 17 and 24 years of age with values and strong work ethics.Areas to be explored include Workplace Communications, Rights and Responsibilities of the Employer, Exceptional Customer Service, Professionalism in the Workplace, Volunteerism, Career Development and Effective Leadership. Participants will be placed with public and private sector organisations for a three-week internship period in July/August, following their orientation.Minister of Youth and Culture, Hon. Lisa Hanna, told JIS News that the decision to include youth with disabilities emerged from a meeting she held with them last November.“I wanted to find out what was important to them and they spoke to me about job opportunities,” Miss Hanna said, adding that she was impressed with the group of young persons, some of whom had successfully completed their studies, despite having multiple disabilities.“We felt that the National Youth Service should also incorporate and give access to persons with disabilities, and so this year, in all our programmes we have reserved spaces for people with disabilities to have the same internships, and the same kinds of opportunities like other young people,” she said.In her presentation in the recent Sectoral Debate, Minister Hanna said that during the 2013/2014 financial year, the NYS will have an intake of 4,000 young persons, with 375 being youth with disabilities. The Minister pointed out that the youth will be placed in different entities, depending on the nature of their disabilities.Mikhaila Rhone, one of several disabled persons at the session, said the programme will assist her to be more confident. “The fact that I am here means that I have the potential and I can do it, so I am very happy to be a part of the programme,” she added.Miss Rhone said that she will be encouraging other young persons to send in their applications. “I will be encouraging them to apply, and I will let them know that they (NYS) do not discriminate and they will be greeted and welcomed,” she said.Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, Miss Rhone is advising other young persons to pursue their goals and to not give up.Contact: E. • These Arent Your RegularSeason Cavs

The Cleveland Cavaliers that swept the top-seeded Toronto Raptors out of the postseason in dominant fashion looked completely different from the Cavs team that eked out 50 wins in the regular season. And with good reason: The bulk of Cleveland’s postseason minutes have gone to, quite literally, a different team. Through the first two rounds of the playoffs, the Cavaliers have leaned heavily on a five-man lineup that had never shared the court before. In the team’s series against the Pacers and Raptors, Cleveland’s most-used lineup has been George Hill, J.R. Smith, Kyle Korver, LeBron James and Kevin Love. So far this postseason, they’ve logged 110 minutes together. That’s 110 more than they played together in the regular season. Compared to the Toronto Raptors, whose most-used lineup in the playoffs1OG Anunoby, DeMar DeRozan, Serge Ibaka, Kyle Lowry and Jonas Valanciunas. logged 801 minutes together in the regular season, Cleveland looks like it’s experimenting on the fly. But it’s working. Cleveland’s most-used postseason lineup is outscoring opponents by 41 points, good for third-best in the playoffs. The Cavs’ second-most-used lineup this postseason, which features José Calderón in place of George Hill, is also without precedent. Cleveland is the only remaining team in the playoffs that has given more than 20 percent of its postseason minutes to a lineup that didn’t see any time together in the regular season.2Although it should be noted that only about half the total playoff field gave more than 20 percent of the team’s minutes to any one lineup of any description. In addition to the Cavs, the Raptors, Pelicans and Rockets have all leaned heavily on a single lineup.Midseason trades and injuries are the primary reasons for this. Right around the time Cleveland acquired George Hill at the trade deadline, Kevin Love missed 20 games with a fractured hand. By the time Love had returned from injury, J.R. Smith had been moved out of the starting lineup to run the team’s second unit. A short while later, Kyle Korver took a leave of absence to deal with a family issue and a nagging foot injury. The lineup had no opportunity for chemistry-building before the playoffs. And even then, George Hill missed three games during their series with the Pacers due to back spasms.Having Hill in the lineup unlocks a major component of Cleveland’s offense. Not only does it give the Cavs another person (besides James) to bring the ball up the court, it also allows Hill and Love to run a pick-and-roll that creates defensive mismatches that are easier to exploit than the mismatches created by the James and Love version of the pick-and-roll. After last night’s game, Love said in the postgame press conference, “And for me personally, setting a 1-5 pick-and-roll, that was something that I missed, especially in the first series when [Hill] was out with his back.”After Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, LeBron James was asked how happy he was with his team’s chemistry thus far. James noted that it was just their ninth game in the postseason together, but in some ways it was just the ninth game ever for this iteration of the Cavs.Of the seven remaining playoff teams, the Golden State Warriors are the only other club that has been using untested lineups. But now that Steph Curry has returned after rehabbing a knee injury, the Warriors are back to using lineups like the “Hamptons Five,” which they’ve featured throughout the last two seasons. How you view Tyronn Lue, Cleveland’s head coach, colors how you view his postseason lineups. If you think Lue is in over his head, you might believe that he’s making things up as he goes. But if you have more faith in his abilities, you might believe that this has been Lue’s plan the entire time. One piece of evidence in favor of the latter theory is that Lue hinted before the end of the regular season that he had something up his sleeve that he was saving for the playoffs. “We’ll probably do things we haven’t done all season when it comes to the playoffs, things we’ve been working on all year,” Lue told Cleveland.com.The playoffs are meant to be the culmination of everything that teams work on over the regular season. Coaches spend 82 games fine-tuning their schemes, rotations and lineups to find out what works and what doesn’t. By the time the playoffs arrive, there aren’t many stones left unturned. Which is why the way that Cleveland swept Toronto with an untested lineup is so surprising for the Cavaliers and so disappointing for the Raptors. In previous years, when people explained why the LeBron-led Cavaliers improved during the playoffs compared to the regular season, they usually chalked it up the to the team giving more effort — or flipping the proverbial switch. The difference this year is their lineups.Check out our latest NBA predictions. read more
