  • Kurtenbach: The Warriors played the ultimate trump card in Game 1 vs. the Clippers

first_imgSpecifically, Stephen Curry was too much for Los Angeles to handle. While the scrappy Clippers found a way to go blow-for-blow with the rest of the turnover-prone Warriors’ roster for the first three quarters of the contest, they had no answer for the two-time MVP, who turned in a near-perfect offense performance in Game 1.Curry scored 38 points, dished out 7 assists, and pulled down 15 rebounds in the Warriors’ 121-104 win, carrying his team when they were struggling and inspiring it to play better basketball once the Warriors went ahead. It was yet another transcendent performance for the Baby Faced Assassin — a string of escalating highlights that would have gone against the run of play, if not for Curry’s ability to singlehandedly define a game at will. What happens when Clippers center Montrezl Harrell doesn’t have one of the best games of his career, scoring 24 points in his first 23 minutes of action? What happens if LA’s silky two-guard Lou Williams doesn’t have a great offensive game? What happens if DeMarcus Cousins — who played in his first playoff game Saturday — stops forcing things on both sides of the court and lets the game simply flow and his talent shine? What happens when the defensive maestro Draymond Green, whom the Clippers dared to shoot all game, doesn’t need to be the Warriors’ second-best offensive player? (Green shot 58 percent and scored 17 points Saturday.)The likelihood is that the result of such changes will bring a result much worse than Saturday’s outcome. And make no mistake, Saturday’s outcome didn’t look very good.(Anda Chu/Bay Area News Group)The Warriors have several levels of better basketball yet to play this postseason. The Clippers, on the other hand, do not.And yet it is Golden State with a 1-0 lead in the series. The Clippers entered Saturday’s Game 1 as 100-to-1 to win the series in Las Vegas. If you were to have placed a bet on the Warriors to advance to the second round, you would have needed to bet $50,000 to win $100. That’s if you could find a place to make that bet — according to ESPN, some sports books weren’t even offering the series to bettors, it was so lopsided. But there was a clear reason the Warriors were such prohibitive favorites in the series — in basketball, talent is the ultimate trump card and it was proven, once again, on Saturday. Click here if you’re unable to view the gallery on your mobile device.OAKLAND — Practice makes perfect, and for 82 regular season games, the Warriors practiced apathy against inferior opponents. And for large portions of Saturday’s playoff opener, they showed off their mastery of the craft.Golden State — on the whole — played sloppy, disjointed, uninspired basketball to open their postseason. But, as we have seen so many times over the years, those struggles simply didn’t matter. The Warriors’ talent absolutely overwhelmed the Clippers — the biggest playoff series underdog in the last 30 years of the NBA playoffs.center_img And with each preposterous 3-pointer Curry made (he was 8-for-12 from beyond the arc) and every subsequent and deserved M-V-P chant from the Oracle Arena crowd, you could see a bit more of the Clippers’ spirit break. By the end of the contest, with team leader Patrick Beverley in the locker room after being ejected in the fourth quarter and coach Doc Rivers leaning into officials as they walked off the court, there was little to none remaining. That’s because the Clippers know they missed their shot to turn this series — easily written off as a four-game sweep for the Warriors — on its head. The conditions were perfect — the Clippers threw their best at the Warriors and Golden State lacked incisiveness for most of the contest. And yet, despite that, Los Angeles still came up miles short, thanks to two Curry-led Warriors runs — short bursts of dominance amid a morass of turnovers and mental lapses — in the second and third quarters.Technically speaking, the Clippers are still in good position the best-of-seven-game series, down only one game, but in a showdown this lopsided, it’s hard to see a path back for them after Saturday’s contest.Because if the Warriors won by 17 points Saturday, what happens when the Warriors make schematic adjustments to what the Clippers showed them in Game 1?What happens when Kevin Durant, who scored 23 points on 50 percent shooting Saturday, takes full, ruthless advantage of the nearly one-foot size advantage he has on his main mark, the petulant Beverley, and turns in a hyper-efficient offensive game — the kind we’ve seen so often from him over the last two postseasons?last_img read more

  • Tips For Filming in the Rain

first_imgIf you’re shooting in the wilderness and think it might rain, PremiumBeat has a guide on how to help prepare for wet circumstances to help protect your gear. Rain does very much seem to be the bane of many filmmaker’s creative life. Yet, why do we so often see rain scenes in films?Well, rain just makes everything a little bit more magical. What are your experiences with shooting in the rain? Share them in the comments below! Filming in the rain is definitely a challenge, but sometimes it’s a must. Use these tips and tricks to make your rainy shots worth the effort.Top image via SyncopyMaking rain is one of the most difficult things you can do in a picture. The above quote is from 1st AD Nilo Otero (Inception, The Dark Knight). It’s from the Inception behind-the-scenes video featured in this article. Otero is certainly not alone in his view. You’ll find that within the majority of filmmaking books, the various authors always tend to state that if you can change a scene that involves rain to normal weather, then do so. So, just how hard is it to film rain? There are a few factors that come into play. The Challenges of Shooting in RainVideo Playerhttps://pbblogassets.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/2016/08/Vagabond-Rain-Sequence.mp400:0000:0000:00Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume.Have you ever tried to film in the rain and noticed it just didn’t look that great? It looked as if it was only a light shower, but on location, you were getting soaked to the bone?Check out the video sequence above. It’s a shot from my short film which was captured only a few weeks ago. The character looks wet, there’s rainwater on the plants, and you can see that the sky is gray. I can also account for getting soaked behind the camera. Nevertheless, you can’t see the rain in the composition; it just looks like a misty spray of water. In fact, the rain was relatively heavy. In the Jimmy Kimmel Live skit below, he mocks the Californian news reporters for their coverage of the rain — but more importantly, take note that throughout the various news reports you can hardly, if at all, see the rain. This comes down to two things — the size of the rain and the shutter angle. Raindrops, even during a moderate downpour, are often too small and translucent for the camera to capture. When you factor in an 180-degree shutter angle, fast-moving objects like raindrops become nothing but a blur. What Can You Do to Capture Rain?If you’re shooting a documentary and can’t stage or recreate the shot — and rain within the composition is a must — you can look at decreasing the shutter angle (increasing the shutter speed). A faster shutter speed will give the individual frames more sharpness, and you’ll be able to see the rain in a lot more detail.Janusz Kaminski creatively utilized this in Saving Private Ryan, as seen above. Although the 45-degree shutter angle was a primary choice to make the violence of war appear more aggressive on screen, minute elements such as water and dirt were captured in greater detail. However, that still won’t give you the grandiose level of rain you find within films. That’s because real rain never will. A majority of rain in movies is artificial. There are various types of machines for this purpose, from crane-attached rain rigs that can soak a city street to rain wands that can be operated by a single person. These produce much larger water droplets (and at a faster rate) which helps the camera pick up the rain at an 180-degree shutter. Most major cities will have companies that can supply such rigs, but they will likely come with the added cost of also hiring out the company’s crew members to operate the machinery. If your budget is thinning, you can always search YouTube for tutorials on making your own rain machine. Here’s one from Tom Antos.Lighting for RainUsing a rain rig is only the first part of shooting rain. One of the biggest undertakings is the lighting. If you light the rain from upstage (behind the camera), it’s not going to show — the rain needs to be illuminated from the back. Filming a rain scene at night assists this element.Special effects coordinator Scott Fisher (Dunkirk, Suicide Squad) says:[Rain scenes] in movies are always typically shot at night because it looks the best with backlight and it shows the rain. You watch a football game or something, and they say ‘Look how much it’s raining’ but you don’t see anything, and that’s the daytime rain problem. There are a few key components you need to finalize before you shoot.Make sure the lighting is not too intense and close to the edge of the frame. A really hard light will cause the rain to appear artificial. It’s equally as important to make sure that the light illuminating the rain doesn’t illuminate the back of the actors. This can be perceived as sunlight and will look incredibly odd for an exterior shot on a rainy day. With the mention of sunshine, we come to one of the most important aspects. It is critical to point out that using any rain system on a sunny day will completely ruin the illusion of it being a rainy day. As special effects supervisor Chris Corbould says in the Inception BTS video, “It’s not a common practice to shoot a rain scene in daylight.”Working out the configuration of the shoot to portray overcast lighting will be the hardest challenge of them all. Academy Award-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister shared his experience with working in the midday sun on Inception:The filming posed a particular challenge for me in terms of the lighting. To try and make it look like an overcast day when it’s sunny out. Chris knew I was sweating this out. After I stopped praying for it to be overcast after months and months, I gave up on that and started doing my homework to try and figure out where exactly the sun was going to be at what time of day, and do my best to shoot around it.I had wonderful help from a fantastic key grip Ray Garcia, who plotted the course of the sun, and was able to block the sun out with a number of different devices, of condors and cherry pickers and getting on roofs and putting up flags. That contributes to the look of the film in a way that’s hard to describe. Certain times we had to embrace the sun a little bit and our joke was ‘ok, well it’s a dream anyway.’Filming in the Rain: Safety FirstWhen shooting in the rain, water will inevitably get everywhere. When lighting equipment and other electronics are scattered around the location, it poses a significant safety risk.In the book Cinematography: Theory and Practice (one of PremiumBeat’s recommended books for filmmakers), author and filmmaker Blain Brown says to take the following safety precautions when working with artificial rain.Raise all connectors, especially distribution connectors, off the ground on apple boxes. Wrap them in plastic and seal with tape. Use electrical tape, as gaffer tape won’t withstand water.Ground everything you can.Put rain hats on all lights. Protect the lenses of all large lights; water on a hot lens will shatter it with the possibility of glass flying out.Cover equipment racks and other spare equipment with heavy plastic.Crew members should wear insulating shoes and stand on rubber mats whenever working with electrical equipment.Overserve all electrical safety rules religiously.last_img read more

  • Ram temple a symbol of self-respect: VHP

first_imgThe Ram Janmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya is a symbol of Hindu religious sentiments and self-respect, Vishwa Hindu Parishad secretary general Milind Parande has said.Speaking to the media in the city on Sunday, Mr. Parande termed the Supreme Court verdict on the Ayodhya title suit as “the victory of truth” and a result of the struggle and sacrifices made by lakhs of Hindus. “As the Supreme Court has asked the Central government to organise a trust for the construction of the temple, we hope that the government soon takes steps for it,” he said. The VHP secretary general also took on the Kerala government on the Sabarimala temple controversy, saying it is the intent of the ruling party to hurt the religious sentiments of Hindu devotees.“The VHP does not worry about being a part of the trust committee, but we believe that the construction [of the Ram temple] should be done according to the wishes of Hindu society… The temple should be constructed with the money of Hindu society as it’s the Hindu society’s temple, and it should not become a government temple,” Mr. Parande said.Given that the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has decided to file a review petition against the Ayodhya verdict, Mr. Parande said it was their right to file a review petition, although the decision of Supreme Court was very balanced. “They had the time in the 40-day hearings to prove that the disputed land had a Muslim graveyard or it was an empty land, but they failed to prove it.” He said if the AIMPLB thought the demolition of the Babri mosque was illegal, it should also think of the temple at that site, which he claimed was demolished before the mosque.Mr. Parande said neither the VHP nor the Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas had asked for any donations for the temple construction in the recent times, and warned people not to believe in rumours.Hee also accused the Communist Party of Kerala of hurting religious feelings of Hindu devotees by trying to portray the Sabarimala temple issue as one of discrimination towards women. The VHP secretary general also accused the Kerala government and Christian missionaries of wanting to hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus, for which, they are using the Sabarimala issue. Mr. Parande was in Mumbai to attend an annual function of a home for cancer patients managed by the VHP.last_img read more

  • Changed insolvency norms by April next to speed up process

first_imgNew Delhi: The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) is in the process of being changed to be effective from the next fiscal to accomodate the fast changing creditor-debtor scenario, according to the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI). The IBBI on Saturday invited comments from stakeholders and the public on making changes to the current regulations notified under the IBC, 2016. The changes the IBBI is looking are in the regulations under Voluntary Liquidation Process, 2017, Fast Track Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process regulations, 2017, Liquidation Process, 2016, and the Insolvency Resolution Process for Corporate Persons, 2016, among others. Also Read – Thermal coal import may surpass 200 MT this fiscalRecent developments like the Supreme Court striking down the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) circular last year on banks resolving their massive non-performing assets (NPAs or bad loans) has also made a case for review of certain criteria in the overarching laws of IBC,” the IBBI said in notice. “In a dynamic environment the stakeholders could play a more active role in making regulations. They may contemplate, at leisure, the important issues in the extant regulatory framework that hinder transactions and offer alternate solutions to address them, in addition to responding urgently to draft regulations proposed by the regulator. This is akin to crowdsourcing of ideas”, it said. “The comments received between April 20, 2019, – December 31, 2019, shall be processed together and following the due process, regulations will be modified to the extent considered necessary. It will be the endeavour of the IBBI to notify modified regulations by March 31, 2020, and bring them into force on April, 1, 2020.”last_img read more
