  • AH Celebrates Completion of New Borough Hall

first_imgATLANTIC HIGHLANDS — “Finally,” said John Scheidt, president of Santorini Construction company, offering a sigh of relief and a smile of appreciation as the borough celebrated the completion of a two-year, $6 million renovation of the borough municipal building at 100 First Ave.Though a few small tasks remain to be done before the building is fully operational, Scheidt joined Mayor Frederick J. Rast III, the Borough Council, former mayors and borough employees in a New Year’s Day ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new facility. While the project was more expensive than projected and slightly behind the projected timeline, there were extenuating circumstances that contributed to the cost increases and delays, said Borough Administrator Adam Hubeny. Those included changes and upgrades the governing body agreed upon, and some snags related to utility work and issues with the weather, Hubeny said. The project came in at approximately $300,000 over the initial cost projections.Rast and the governing body decided to move forward with the renovation and expansion project back in 2009, to address long discussed concerns about the old borough facilty.Officials had admitted the municipal building, which contains its business offices, public library and police headquarters and dates back to 1970, had become too small to accommodate modern needs, did not adhere to handicap accessibility requirements, and had developed moisture and mold problems. Rast, with the support of the six-member council (four Republican and two Democrats), said it would be financially prudent for them to move forward with a plan to renovate and add additional space. He argued, given the economic climate many contractors faced, the borough would likely get very attractive bids and quite low interest rates, making it a propitious time to undertake the large project.“They had enough foresight to move forward with this project in difficult economic times,” the mayor said of the council. “They really saved a lot of money.”The borough also saved some money by taking an offer from the Avaya telecommunications company, which offered the borough office furniture from its closed Middletown facility. That, Rast said, probably saved about $100,000. Another cost saving measure, officials have said in the past, was for the local library to join the county system, with the county responsible for salaries and benefits.“Unless you’ve worked in construction, it’s difficult to appreciate a renovation as opposed to a new construction,” explained project architect Eli Goldstein. “And this was no ordinary renovation.”The project took the site’s existing 10,000 square feet and expanded it by another 8,000, officials explained when they broke ground on the project in March 2010. With the added space, “This building will allow us to grow,” and should continue to be viable for another 50 years or more, Hubeny said. And in the final analysis, Hubeny said, “You will be very happy as residents and taxpayers when you see what was done inside.”“We are happy with what we have,” said Police Chief Gerard Vasto of his new police headquarters. The old headquarters were built in 1970 and “built for 1970,” he said. Now, “Everything flows so well downstairs,” where the department will be situated, he said.“The officers will truly have a police headquarters that is truly functional,” the chief said, noting the department should be housed in the new facility within the week.Atlantic Highlands Mayor Fred Rast cuts the ribbon at the newly-renovated Borough Hall.last_img read more

There’s an exploding food scene, with vegetables, wine, and cheese coming from the gorgeous Cape Winelands; and then there’s the top of Table Mountain which, on the right day, can feel as pristine and empty as when the Dutch first pitched up in the early 17th century.”The city also swept the board for the Condé Nast list of the best 15 hotels in Africa. The One&Only, Ellerman House, Mount Nelson, Twelve Apostles and Cape Cadogan hotels grabbed the first five positions, the Cape Grace ninth place, the Table Bay Hotel 10th and the Victoria & Alfred Hotel 15th. South African hotels in total took up 11 places on the list of 15, including the Saxon Boutique Hotel in Johannesburg (7), and Le Quartier Francais (11) and La Residence (14), both in Franschhoek near Cape Town. The corkscrew-shaped wine repository by industrial designer Brian Steinhobel in the Ellerman House wine cellar is moulded from carbon fibre and holds more than 1 500 bottles of the hotel’s collection of more than 7 500 South African wines. • The Corner Pin Effect in Adobe Premiere Pro

first_imgIn this post, we’ll show you how to use the Corner Pin Effect in Adobe Premiere Pro – a handy tool for compositing signage or elements in your video frame, even at an angle!Let’s say you want to ‘composite’ an item into your shot that is a rectangle but needs to sit on the side of a parked van…or maybe on a wall behind a person you’re interviewing.  One of the main objectives it to make the composited element not look composited – it needs to look like it belongs in the shot (especially tricky if it’s at an angle).  For that, you need the excellent Corner Pin effect in Premiere Pro…and a little understanding of how to ‘nest’ your layers if you want to add some pan and zoom!In this example, we’ll take some footage with a sign on it …Let’s say for arguments sake that we want to replace this sign with another sign that may promote our company or hide some details that we don’t want to show on camera.  Keep in mind that the sign is positioned at an angle (more on that later).Compositing with Premiere Pro Corner PinTo start with you need to create your new sign in Photoshop or another photo editing application and then bring it into your project.  Drop it into your timeline (top layer) and trim it out to the same length as your footage.New Sign Brought into Project New Sign in Program MonitorAt this point it is tempting to go to the Effects Control Panel and start to play with the ‘Motion’ or ‘Fixed’ Effects to try and make it fit.  However, this is exactly what you should NOT do!Motion or Fixed Effects in the Effects Control PanelWhat you want to do is keep the sign you created at the same size (if possible) as the sequence you are working in.This means that if you are the one specifying how the sign ought to be created or you are creating it yourself, try to create the sign using the same dimensions as your sequence.  Then,  when it is brought into your project it will fill the Program Monitor.  While this isn’t essential, it is ideal and will save time later on.Next, find the ‘Corner Pin’ Effect in the ‘Distort’ category in your ‘Effects’ panel. The Corner Pin Effect in the Effects PanelNow apply the Corner Pin Effect to the new sign you created.  Then, go to the ‘Effect Controls Panel’ making sure you click on the sign in video layer 2 to see all its’ controls.Corner Pin Effect ControlsAt first, it’s tempting to start to drag at the hot text in the effect to move the corner pins, but this isn’t the best way to use this effect. Whenever you see the following icon on an effect (noted by arrows below) it means you can click on the name of that effect and then adjust it live in the Program Monitor. So click on the name ‘Corner Pin’…Icon Indicating this Effect can be Controlled in the Program Monitor by Clicking on its Name… and you will see the following in the program monitor.‘Handles’ in the Program MonitorNow you can select the handles and drag them into position.Click and Drag to Adjust the Handles to the SignIf you struggle to get the handles to just the right position, there is a zoom option at the bottom of the program monitor that will allow you to zoom in.  By doing this you will get scroll bars along the side and bottom of the Program Monitor to get a more precise placement.Zoom Option in the Program MonitorScroll Bars in the Program Monitor when ZoomedOnce you have the handles in the correct position don’t forget to click the zoom option and put it back to ‘Fit’.At this point you have achieved your goal using the Corner Pin Effect in Premiere Pro.  The sign has been replaced with your own sign that fits perfectly at a perspective.  And, as long as no one walks in front of the sign this will work very well. However, if someone or something was to move in front of the sign it would break the illusion (then it’s time to start masking!)Lastly, what if you now want to do something like starting fully zoomed into your sign and then pulling back to reveal the sign in place on your footage? If you tried to do this with the 2 layers you would quickly find that it is very hard to do as the two layers are independent of one another. What you really need is some way to make Premiere Pro see both layers as if they were one item that could be scaled and moved, with both layers ‘locked together’.  Thankfully that is something that Premiere Pro can do very well.Select both layers, right click them and choose ‘nest’ …The Right-Click ‘Nest’ OptionThen, to help you know what you’re dealing with I would also advice right-clicking and renaming the nested sequence in your timeline – although this will only update the name in your timeline and not your project panel!Right-Click Rename Nested SequenceNow, Premiere Pro will see this newly renamed nested sequence as a single piece of footage that you can scale and move however you like, without losing the relationship between the two items inside that nested sequence. So if you wanted to start fully zoomed into the replacement sign and then pull out to reveal the whole shot, that would be easy to do on the nested sequence. This is a prime example of how to make use of the Corner Pin Effect in Premiere Pro.  It can help you cover, remove, replace or add items to a shot…potentially saving a lot of heartache!last_img read more

  • The Power In Silence

first_imgThere is power in silence. When you feel uncomfortable, you may continue talking when it no longer serves you.Continuing to speak can give the impression that you are not confident in what you are saying. Worse, it can prevent your dream client from processing a question or statement for themselves because you are answering it for them (or because you are just making noise).PauseThere is power in the pause.A pause creates space. Your dream client can use that space to process your well-placed question and think through the answer for themselves. This is important when you are asking powerful questions. It’s also important when your question is a question that they haven’t yet answered for themselves. You might ask the question, “You’ve shared three big areas that you believe need improvement. Which of these areas is compelling enough for you to do something different to improve your results?” If you want to know how to compel your prospects to change, find out what is already compelling them. You might assume that you are supposed to be solving all three problems, and maybe you will. By pausing, you create the space for your prospect to process the question and decide what is important enough to pursue.Time to ProcessOne area where it’s easy to make assumptions and speak for your client is when you are helping them identify risks and resolve concerns. Because we have proof providers, we assume that what we have is what the client wants. A question and a pause can be a more effective choice. You might say, “What concerns do you still need me to address for you now?” No matter what the answer is, ask a powerful question and pause. Say, “How can I help you feel confident about that issue and what would you need to see from me?” Maybe they want references. Or they might be more confident with a site visit, or simply meeting and vetting the team that will handle their business. There is no reason to guess what you prospective client needs from you when you can ask them and pause long enough for them to think through their answer.More SpaceIf you provide the person you are speaking with more space, they will fill it with what’s important to them.Being a great communicator has much more to do with the quality of your listening than it does your ability to speak.
