  • Why Microsoft Is Thankful for a 5YearOld Xbox Fan

first_img Sometimes you can find solutions to problems in the unlikeliest of places. At least that’s what Microsoft learned after being alerted to a security flaw in their Xbox system thanks to a discerning San Diego customer named Kristoffer Von Hassel. The catch? The video-game enthusiast and accidental hacker happens to 5 years old.The little boy figured out he could hack into his father’s Xbox Live account by typing in a wrong password, getting directed to the verification page, pressing the space bar multiple times and then hitting enter.Kristoffer’s dad Robert Davies, who works in computer security, couldn’t have been prouder, telling KGTV News, “Just being 5 years old and being able to find vulnerability and latch onto that. I thought that was pretty cool.”Related: 4 Ways the ‘New’ Microsoft Is Dramatically Different From the ‘Old’ MicrosoftAs for Kristoffer’s reaction?  “I was like, yeah!”Although initially excited, he was worried that he might get in trouble. But that was hardly the case once his Dad let Microsoft know about the issue. And who knows?  Given Kristoffer’s affinity for technology, the company could very well be looking at a member of their 2027 intern class. But until then, not only did Microsoft fix the bug — noting in a statement, “We’re always listening to our customers and thank them for bringing issues to our attention” — but they included Kristoffer on their list of security researchers, gave him $50, four free games and a year’s subscription to Xbox Live. Related: Talk About Ambition: One Girl Scout Sold 18,000 Boxes of Cookies Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals 2 min read Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right.center_img April 4, 2014 Register Now »last_img read more

first_img 2 min read August 16, 2016 Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Globalcenter_img I’ve always wondered what it would be like to have x-ray vision. As a homeowner and frequent do-it-yourself renovator, I’ve especially wondered — and needed — to know exactly what’s inside a wall.Hey, dreams can become reality. Enter Walabot DIY, a gizmo that attaches to your smartphone via a magnet. Its sensors can “see” things within your walls, such as plastic and metal pipes, electrical wires and studs. Israel-based Vayyar Imaging, the 3-D imaging sensor company behind Walabot DIY says it can see up to four inches deep into walls made of drywall or even cement.Related: Say Howdy to This Rolling, Robot CowboySo, it’s kind of like a traditional stud finder, but with super x-ray vision steroids.Owning a home and doing renovations yourself can be a treacherous undertaking. Cutting or hammering through walls can be dangerous if you don’t know what’s inside of them — namely gas pipes, live electrical wires, water pipes, you name it.Related: China’s Car-Swallowing Bus Is Apparently for RealThe Walabot DIY can apparently even detect motion, so if you think you have a rodent problem, it can probably confirm it. • Why Your Innocent Office Printer May Be a Target For Hackers

first_img 7 min read Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Register Now » January 31, 2018 Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global Most of us hadn’t even had time to violate our New Year’s resolutions when, three days into 2018, the bombshell news broke of a major security flaw found inside Intel processors, affecting millions of computers. As CEO of a software solutions company supplying corporations and government agencies alike with on-premises and cloud-based solutions, I took notice.Related: Here’s How Taking Cybersecurity Very Seriously Enhances Your BrandFour independent research organizations had just revealed that 100 percent of my clients faced a new security risk. This is the new normal for every one of us.On one hand, this story demonstrates the benefits of cloud computing. Our cloud-service provider was already aware of the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities — the two actual flaws in Intel processors that led to the story’s breaking. Having proactively prepared the patch for their servers, the CSP was able to handle the issue quickly and without further trouble. The implementation of that fix, throughout our four cloud instances serving thousands of customers worldwide, was completed within 48 hours, and with no down time.Protecting this many individual customers so quickly and completely would have been impossible had the servers been on site. But the Meltdown and Spectre flaws remind us that security threats can emerge from unexpected places and that they can have far-reaching impact. Hackers and data thieves are adept at finding creative entry points within the expanded attack surface that our digital world creates. So, while special training, data encryption, multifactor authentication and strong passwords have become a priority these days, risks persist. And organizations may still be overlooking key weak points in their network. The reality, then, is that there are two types of companies: those that have discovered security breaches and those that don’t yet know they’ve been breached. Why protecting your data is so criticalA data breach can cause you to lose your customers’ trust. According to a study by Gemalto, 66 percent of consumers surveyed said they wouldn’t do business with a company that had had sensitive information exposed due to a data breach. After all, the costs of such a breach can be extraordinary, as the recent Equifax cyberheist demonstrsated. But that’s not the only risk. The other problem is that, just as they are finding unique ways to steal data, hackers are also finding ways to use it against business owners. If your competitors get their hands on your stolen data, or if hackers hold it for ransom, you can lose valuable proprietary information. This was demonstrated by the Sony Pictures attack in 2014 and the more recent WannaCry ransomware virus. So, there is a strong business case for improving every aspect of network security.Of course, the threat isn’t limited to large enterprises. Entrepreneurs and business owners can learn a lesson in security from patent trolls. Medium-sized businesses are the ideal target: They’re big enough to be worth the effort, yet small enough to lack the resources to protect their patents and to fight flimsy but effective infringement lawsuits. Security follows the same pattern.Three attack targets that are often overlookedSome aspects of network and data security receive more attention than others, such as mobile and internet of things devices, making it easier for hackers to gain access through lesser-known avenues. Here are three attack vectors you probably haven’t considered, along with ways to mitigate the risks they pose.1. Monitor your company’s social media accounts. Every organization should be vigilant about protecting its brand’s social media presence. A study by Proofpoint revealed that social media phishing scams increased by 150 percent in 2016, making them the fastest-growing active threat to social media accounts. In one high-profile example, Russian hackers breached the computer of a Pentagon official through a tweet about a vacation package from a robot account. Hackers use social media because employees, while often trained to watch for suspicious emails, aren’t as cautious about social media activity.Related: The Dos and Don’ts of Cyber Security Measures to Help You Protect Your Business and AssetsThat’s why you should always be on the lookout for fake accounts; and why, if you find one, you should report it immediately. Consider writing a post or tweet to alert customers and contacts. This will help establish your business as a trustworthy company that prioritizes security. Also, limit the number of people with publishing rights on your official social media channels, just as you do with server admin rights.2. Secure your printers, the forgotten entry point. Data-loss prevention solutions put a digital wrapper around a business, but paper can sometimes escape that wrapper. Office printers are not only potential sources of data loss and confidentiality issues, but attack vectors that hackers can exploit.Last year, for example, a hacker called “Weev” accessed “every publicly accessible printer in North America,” including those on several college campuses, and printed anti-Semitic and racist fliers, the New York Times reported. The exploit was possible because many printers ship ready to “plug and play”; this makes them easy to integrate into a network, but they’re not secure. Modern printers are essentially advanced, specialized network hosts, and as such, they should be given the same level of security attention as traditional computers.Lock down all network printers by using firewalls, changing their default passwords and disabling any unnecessary protocols. Also, be sure to keep up with firmware updates when manufacturers discover and report security flaws. Check back regularly to ensure that any “hard resets” haven’t reintroduced open ports and default passwords. Finally, implement secure pull-printing technology. In a secure pull-printing environment, employees print to a secure queue and then use their ID card or log-in credentials to release (or “pull”) their documents at any network printer. The old way is to send print jobs directly to a specific printer for immediate output, but that introduces risk. How many “confidential” documents have you seen left unattended near a shared printer at work? There’s too much at stake to allow documents to be printed and then forgotten. Don’t let sensitive information fall into the wrong hands: Secure your printing workflows.3. Educate your employees — continually.Protecting against data breaches isn’t just your IT department’s concern. Employees pose both the biggest risk and the best defense. Train all employees about security risks and best practices, and empower security staff to make decisions to improve your IT infrastructure. Educating employees about the massive damage a data breach can inflict should convince them to take their role in company-wide security efforts seriously.Related: Don’t Put Your Profits at Risk by Ignoring This Crucial Protection for Your BusinessYou can also work with security services to test employees with fake phishing attempts. Verizon’s 2017 Data Breach Investigations report showed that employees studied opened approximately 30 percent of phishing emails, even after they had been warned about them. Showing how many employees opened even a fake phishing attempt can prove that the company is susceptible to an attack if employees aren’t vigilant.Training should entail more than bulletins or informational emails. Make every department aware that security is a top priority, and make sure everyone understands the company’s security policies. As the world continues to progress toward an even more digital society, choosing not to prioritize security in all its many facets is risky business. You don’t want to lose your customers’ trust or let valuable information fall into the wrong hands. Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box.last_img read more

  • How Well Does Your State Protect You From the Aftermath of Data

first_img There’s no federal law when it comes to consumer protections regarding data breaches in the U.S. Laws vary by state. While some might be strict and others loose, it’s important to know what’s happening in your state and just how protected — or unprotected — you are.Related: The Worst Data Breaches in the U.S., Ranked State by StateWhile laws might vary, they do share one thing in common — almost all states define a data breach as the “unauthorized acquisition of covered information that compromises security, integrity and confidentiality.” To break it down further, covered information usually includes first and last names along with social security numbers, driver’s license numbers, email addresses and passwords, credit card numbers and medical records. When a breach is discovered, a majority of states require immediate notification, while states such as Alabama, Ohio, Vermont, Maryland and New Mexico allow a 45-day grace period. In Tennessee, people don’t have to be notified for up to 90 days. How you’re notified that you’ve been a victim of a data breach is another item that varies by state. Many states require written notice, and others allow telephone or electronic notices.Related: How To Protect Your Small Business Against A Data BreachSo which states are the toughest on data breaches? Alabama, California, New Jersey, Ohio, South Carolina and Utah are some of the states with the strictest legislation. Arizona, Colorado and Hawaii stand somewhere in the middle, and on the other end of the spectrum are Mississippi and Kentucky, followed by Washington D.C., Pennsylvania, Georgia and Arkansas. To find out how well your state’s protecting you the effects of a data breach, check out Digital Guardian’s infographic below. • Add AV1 codec support to Windows 10

first_imgAdd AV1 codec support to Windows 10 by Martin Brinkmann on November 11, 2018 in Windows – Last Update: November 11, 2018 – 12 commentsAOMedia Video 1 (AV1) is an up- and coming open video codec that is backed by a large number of tech companies including Mozilla, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Netflix, or Nvidia.AV1 is royalty-free, a fact that makes it very attractive to companies that produce hardware and software that support video streaming.Individual programs or the underlying operating system need to support the AV1 codec for playback. Mozilla and Google support AV1 already in Firefox and Chrome, and support for the codec was added in other programs such as VLC Media Player 3.0, FFmpeg, or MPC-HC.YouTube enabled experimental AV1 support on the video streaming site as well recently.Microsoft released a beta version of the AV1 Video Extension codec for Windows 10 recently. The codec is available on the Microsoft Store and there only for devices running Windows 10 version 1809 or later.Microsoft stopped the rollout of the new feature update for Windows 10 in early October 2018 after reports of serious bugs emerged on the Internet. Microsoft confirmed the bugs and has been working on an updated version ever since. The Av1 Video Extension application for Windows 10 requires that the October 2018 Update for Windows 10 is installed on a device; this limits the reach of the extension significantly at this point in time.Interested users and administrators may install the Av1 video codec from Microsoft’s Store to add support for it to the system.Microsoft published Web Media Extensions and the HEVC Video Extension applications to the Microsoft Store previously to add support for OGG, Vorbis, Theora and HEVC to the Windows 10 operating system.Installation of AV1 Video Codec on supported devices adds playback support for AV1 video files to the device. The codec is installed system-wide; any application may use it to support playback of AV1 video files.Users may play AV1 videos in Microsoft Edge or use apps such as Windows Media Player to play AV1 videos.Microsoft released the initial version as a beta to the Store. The company notes that users may experience performance issues when they play AV1 video files after installation of the video codec on the system and that it will release updates that improve the extension.Closing WordsSupport for the codec is only available in Windows 10 version 1809 or later; customers who run earlier versions of Windows need to find other solutions to add support to their systems.Popular video players such as VLC support AV1 already and all major browsers support it or will support it as well. Now You: What is your take on AV1?SummaryArticle NameAdd AV1 codec support to Windows 10DescriptionMicrosoft released a beta version of the AV1 Video Extension codec for Windows 10 version 1809 that adds AV1 video playback support.Author Martin BrinkmannPublisher Ghacks Technology NewsLogo Advertisementlast_img read more

  • Windows 10 version 1903 Windows Update improvements

first_imgWindows 10 version 1903: Windows Update improvements by Martin Brinkmann on November 16, 2018 in Windows – 23 commentsThe next feature update for Windows 10, Windows 10 version 1903, may include better options to pause Windows updates and improve the operating system’s Active Hours functionality. One of the things that I hear over and over again from Windows administrators and users is that they would like control over the updating process.Microsoft introduced two new update related features in the most recent Windows 10 Insider build. Both options have been added to the Windows Update page of the Settings application.Just use Windows-I to open the Settings application and open Update & Security to see the new options. Note that these will be included in the next feature update; the new options are included in Insider builds only currently. The very first change displays a pause option directly on the main Windows Update settings page. A click on “Pause updates for 7 days” blocks any updates for the selected period. It is currently not possible to undo that on the same page; you need to open the advanced options and modify the pause period there. Seems unlikely that Microsoft will keep it like that on that page. The feature is not really a new feature but it adds some visibility to the pause update functionality of the operating system.Windows 10 users who want to pause for a different period need to open the Advanced options on the same page to do so.Also worth noting is that some updates will still be installed; this is for instance the case for Windows Defender definition updates.Active Hours improvementsActive Hours was introduced in 2016 in Windows 10 as a way to block Windows from rebooting the device automatically after installation of updates. The feature had several shortcomings including the fixed maximum length limit for the feature and missing options to set different Active hours depending on a schedule that deviates from a typical 9 to 5 work scenario.Microsoft extended Active Hours to a maximum of 18 hours in previous versions already. The change in Windows 10 version 1903 introduces a dynamic component to Active Hours. A click on Active Hours under Windows Update displays the new option: Automatically adjust active hours for me based on my daily usage adjusts Active Hours automatically based on device activity. If that will lead to fewer unwanted reboots of the system or more remains to be seen. Windows recommended to set Active Hours from 14:00 to 15:00 on my test system which seemed awfully short considering that I work on the machine regularly. The operating system highlights the recommended period for Active Hours on the page so that you know what it will be set to initially. Since it is dynamic, it might — and probably will — change on a day to day basis. Now You: Which changes would you like to see in this regard?SummaryArticle NameWindows 10 version 1903: Windows Update improvementsDescriptionThe next feature update for Windows 10, Windows 10 version 1903, may include better options to pause Windows updates and Active Hours functionality.Author Martin BrinkmannPublisher Ghacks Technology NewsLogo Advertisementlast_img read more

  • Missing Chromes Use a Prediction Service Setting

first_imgMissing Chrome’s “Use a Prediction Service” Setting? by Martin Brinkmann on April 23, 2019 in Google Chrome – 26 commentsIf you have upgraded Google Chrome to the newest stable version, version 73, and checked the preferences and settings, you may have noticed that the preference “Use a prediction service to load pages more quickly” is no longer listed under privacy and security. If you set the preference previously, you may wonder if it has been removed from the browser or whether it was moved to another location.Short answer: it appears that Google renamed the preference, and that the option to turn off DNS prefetching and the preloading of content is still supported. When Google launched Chrome, it integrated a feature that it called DNS Fetching back then. DNS fetching was designed to retrieve the IP addresses of links on visited webpages to speed up the loading time on activation.Google stated that the feature would speed up the loading by approximately 250ms when compared to cold connections (without fetching). The company introduced preloading of content in later versions of Chrome. Google Chrome would prioritize links and load content of resources with the highest likelihood that a user would visit them.Chrome 73: new preload settingChrome 73 users find a new setting listed in the browser’s preferences. Google Chrome does not display”Use a prediction service to load pages more quickly” anymore but “Preload pages for faster browsing and searching”.The setting has a description: “Uses cookies to remember your preferences, even if you don’t visit those pages”.If you toggle the setting off, Chrome won’t run DNS look ups for links and it won’t preload high priority targets for user actions either.Downside to this is that sites that Chrome connects to may write cookies on the system and may read their own cookies; this may happen even if the linked resource is not visited actively by the user.Google highlights how the setting works on a support page on the official Chrome Support site.Preload pages for faster browsing and searching: Browsers use an IP address to load a webpage. When you visit a webpage, Chrome can look up the IP addresses of all the page’s links and load the ones you might navigate to next. If you turn this setting on, websites and any embedded content that are preloaded can set and read their own cookies as if you had visited them, even if you don’t.Browser extensions like uBlock Origin may force the setting to off automatically. You find the option to disable that in the extension’s options. The extension does this to prevent connections from blocked network requests. Now You: Do you use prefetching?SummaryArticle NameMissing Chrome’s “Use a Prediction Service” Setting?DescriptionGoogle removed the “Use a Prediction Service” setting in Chrome recently, but you find a renamed option still in the settings.Author Martin BrinkmannPublisher Ghacks Technology NewsLogo Advertisementlast_img read more

  • As one gay bar closes work is underway for another

first_imgPurr Cocktail Bar closed mid July after being unable to afford the rising rent cost. The bar’s staff and regulars were sad to see it go. It had been there for 12 years. It will be moving from busy Capitol Hill to the slightly quieter Montlake.Signs went up promising a new venue less than a month after the old one closed. An inclusive space for the LGBTQIA communityAccording to the local news, the bar ‘intends to be more than simply a place to grab a drink, fostering an inclusive space for the LGBTQIA community with a team and clientele that reflect the diversity of the city.’A release explained the new bar will host a ‘wide variety of events day and night: a chef series showcasing the talent of LGBTQIA chefs; a discussion series for queer-focused issues in politics, activism, and community-driven forums; bingo; dance nights; art performances like drag shows; a nightclub; and a restaurant serving dinner and brunch.’The new owner is Joey Burgess. He is already the director of operations for other establishments in the area.He has been ‘planning this venture for 12 years’ and is excited to finally start it.His husband, designer Murf Hall, will design and decorate the space.Share this:TwitterFacebookLike this:Like Loading… Another beloved LGBTI venue abruptly closes in LondonVancouver: From ski slopes to gay bars in under 40 minutesSan Franciscans urge former LGBT eatery be designated as a landmarkRead the full article on Gaystarnews:  :https://www.gaystarnews.com/article/gay-bar-seattle/ eTN Chatroom for Readers (join us)center_img As one gay bar in Seattle, Washington closes, another comes in to fill it’s place. I didn’t really know any gay people. I was sitting there in the nightclub feeling sorry for myself and along came this sweet, delicate voice that said: “May I sit here, please?”‘Matt says, quite simply, they never stopped talking for 13 years. ‘We fell in love so quickly,’ he remembers. ‘We were both in similar situations in that we weren’t out to our parents.’ They moved to London, when Ogston says they were looking forward to sharing their lives and being themselves.Until Naz took his own life at 34 when he jumped from the balcony of their shared flat in London.Naz and Matt in Brazil. | Photo: Naz and Matt FoundationNaz’s family is Muslim and they confronted him about his sexuality in 2014. He had previously made the decision never to come out to them out of fear of what would happen. ‘”They’ll be praying at our doorstep,” he used to say,’ Matt recalls. ‘He put it in a box and that box was never to be opened.’ But then it was, against Naz’s will. Now, though Matt never envisioned a life of activism for himself, that’s precisely what he’s doing. He created the Naz and Matt Foundation in 2014, which ‘exists to empower and support LGBTQI individuals’ and help friends and family ‘work towards resolving challenges linked to sexuality or gender identity’.He also serves on the Survivor Ambassador Panel for Karma Nirvana. The panel supports the work Karma Nirvana does, helping victims of honour-based violence (HBV) and forced marriage, and is backed by Building a Stronger Britain Together (BSBT).Helping people live without judgmentMatt may not be in this position if he hadn’t lost the love of his life. However, Naz’s influence also helped him.‘He taught me what it means to be a good person, to help others and live by moral values,’ Matthew says. ‘He was a doctor so he spent his whole life helping other people. His outlook on life was so forgiving, so accepting.’Naz with his and Matt’s adopted dog, Charlie. | Photo: Naz and Matt FoundationWhen I mistakenly use the term ‘arranged marriage’ rather than ‘forced marriage’, Matt is quick to correct me. It’s an important distinction to make — and a conversation worth having. None of the work he’s doing is meant to dampen others people’s cultures, so long as they don’t harm anyone.‘It’s a complex topic, but honour-based violence often happens to people who are forced into a certain situation or view of the world,’ he explains. ‘Look at the term forced marriage. It’s against people’s wills.’And it’s different than arranged marriages, which practice consent, while forced marriages do not. ‘It’s good we’re having this conversations,’ he reassures me. ‘Because many people have the same misconception. In no way, shape, or form, should we try to dislodge a culture or religion. They’re beautiful, but where they can cross a line, is when they harm somebody else and takes their freedom.’And so he ‘absolutely believes’ religion and the LGBTQI community can coexist, because it’s all about interpretation. Discrimination goes beyond religious beliefs — it’s about fear, he says, and religion is merely used as a justification.‘At the center of every religion is love and peace.’Fighting for unconditional loveMatt’s work with his own foundation and Karma Nirvana is about love.At the foundation, the goal is to make sure any religion never gets between the unconditional love of a parent and children. ‘It’s not anti-religion,’ he posits. They simply want to put aside any barriers and focus on love.‘What we try and do is challenge people’s inability to simply accept their children. It’s not about removing a choice, it’s about giving them more choices.’Naz and Matt in Cornwall. | Photo: Naz and Matt FoundationHe divides his time between that and the Survivor Ambassadors Panel. ‘I can’t sing my praises about it enough.’It’s part of the British charity Karma Nirvana, which, in turn, is backed by the government program Building a Strong Britain Together (BSBT).‘Forced marriage or any form of honour-based violence will not be tolerated in 21st century Britain. These abhorrent crimes are forms of abuse which can have devastating long-standing consequences on victims,’ said Baroness Williams, Minister for Countering Extremism.‘The Building a Stronger Britain Together programme, which Karma Nirvana’s Survivor Ambassador Panel is part of, funds and supports more than 120 community groups and charities across England and Wales which engage communities and strengthen their resilience to extremism.’Matt says the panel feels like a family. They marched during Pride and offers a platform to share victims and survivors’ stories.‘If Naz was here right now, he’d be pushing me to keep doing this work and helping people.’Finding strength againWorking with survivors has its share of hardships and rewards.‘Getting people through in a postive way is one of the hardest parts. We’re getting them to a place of strength again,’ Matt says. Many of them faced abuse, bullying, and coercion from their families. ‘The benefits — they’re life-saving.’He adds one the biggest benefits is simply having a conversation with someone who has faced the same pain. It connects them and helps them feel less alone.‘I still have some very dark days,’ Matt admits. ‘But I can call up anyone on the panel and they will drop everything to help.A message Naz left for Matt. | Photo: Naz and Matt Foundation‘There is a light at the end of the tunnel and there is an appetite for change. The roadside cameras are designed to detect vehicles that go through red lights as well as those breaking the speed limit at junctions. Cheshire Police say twice as many people, a total of 41, died on the county’s roads and motorways last year compared to the previous 12 months – and there have already been fatal collisions in 2019. The Cheshire Road Safety Group (CRSG) hopes the new cameras will lead to a reduction in the number of crashes in Cheshire. Brian Rogers, CRSG implementation manager, said: “Far too many people have died and been seriously injured as a result of collisions on Cheshire roads in recent times. “Cheshire Road Safety Group was set up in April 2011 to reduce the number of people killed or injured on the county’s roads by encouraging greater compliance of speed limits through the operation and maintenance of speed and safety cameras. Resident Jo Dale said: “The lights do tend to slow the traffic down but I am always wary on the middle set but I don’t think we get too many running them.
