  • Government Improves Road Safety in Tantallon

first_imgThe province continues to improve road safety installing centre-line rumble strips on a section of Highway 103 near Tantallon. The strips are being installed from Exit 5 in Tantallon, at the end of the twinned section, for about 40 kilometres to the west at the start of the divided section of Highway 103 near Chester. The $80,000 project, contracted to Industrial Cold Milling, should be completed by Monday, Oct. 31. “These new centre-line rumble strips will provide safer passing opportunities and increased separation from opposing traffic,” said Bill Estabrooks, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. “This is a pilot project, but if the strips have the desired impact, they may be used in other parts of the province.” Centre-line rumble strips can help reduce head-on incidents and oncoming sideswipes by 21 per cent and all crash by 14 per cent. In recent years, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal has been placing shoulder rumble strips on portions of 100 series highways. A typical centre-line rumble strip has grooves cut into the road, with the yellow line painted over top of them.last_img read more

  • Woman behind Stefanie Rengel murder granted unescorted absences from prison

first_imgKITCHENER, Ont. – A young woman who sexually blackmailed her boyfriend into killing a 14-year-old girl nearly a decade ago was so consumed with jealousy at the time that she asked him to kill at least two others she perceived as rivals, she told a parole hearing Wednesday.Melissa Todorovic gave new insights into what led her to orchestrate the killing of Stefanie Rengel as she asked a Parole Board of Canada panel to grant her three unescorted three-day absences from prison — a request the panel granted, saying the 25-year-old had made progress in handling her emotions. The details from Todorovic came as the parole board panel questioned her on the motivations behind Rengel’s killing.Intense jealousy and rage, as well as a desire to exert power over her partner, dominated Todorovic’s relationship with David Bagshaw, who carried out the killing at her command, Todorovic said.“It was a game that we would play continuously,” Todorovic said during the hearing at the Grand Valley Institution for Women in Kitchener, Ont., where she is held. “I liked to see how much he would do for me.”Those feelings also played a role in an earlier relationship that ended abruptly after Todorovic told that boyfriend she wanted a girl he was talking to killed, she said.“My thinking at the time was that if (the girls) were out of the picture, I could be happy with my boyfriend,” she said.Todorovic had previously maintained that while she had pushed Bagshaw to kill Rengel, she didn’t believe he would actually do it.The two-member parole board panel authorized Todorovic’s absences to a halfway house, saying the woman had since worked to manage her jealousy, anger and manipulation, but stressed she still needed to work on her self-esteem and other issues.“While there’s still lots of work for you to do on yourself, you are moving in the right direction,” Lynne VanDaylen said.Todorovic was 15 when Bagshaw stabbed Rengel six times and left her to die in a snowbank outside her house on New Year’s Day, 2008.The two girls had never met but Todorovic grew intensely jealous of Rengel, who had briefly dated Bagshaw two years earlier. She also believed the younger girl was spreading rumours about her.Todorovic was convicted in 2009 for masterminding Rengel’s murder and was sentenced as an adult to life in prison with no chance of parole for seven years — the maximum adult sentence for someone her age.She later sought to have a new trial ordered on appeal, arguing that self-incriminating statements she made to police should not have been admitted as evidence at her trial. But the appeal court upheld her conviction and sentence.Todorovic told the parole board Wednesday that she didn’t feel she had done anything wrong until the moment she was arrested.“When I saw it on the news, I felt guilt then but I didn’t really understand the impact,” she said. Now, she said, “I feel like I’m a monster for telling someone to kill somebody.”Her parole officer noted Todorovic initially showed a lack of insight and empathy but made “significant gains” after her appeal was denied.Through various programs, counselling and medication, Todorovic said she has learned to get her emotions under control and to ask for support. Her newfound skills were put to the test when she received a letter from Bagshaw, who is also serving an adult life sentence after pleading guilty to first-degree murder, she said.“I was caught off guard, I didn’t expect to hear from him ever again,” she said. Though she felt angry and frustrated, Todorovic said she stayed calm and talked to her parole officer and her parents, who were present at Wednesday’s hearing.Asked whether she still had feelings for her accomplice, Todorovic said: “I don’t want anything to do with him now.” Nor is she looking for another relationship at the moment, she said.During her unescorted absences, Todorovic plans to continue her therapy sessions, which she said she can no longer access in prison because she is not considered to have a severe mental illness. She also plans to work with an employment counsellor to see what options she could have once released. Her parole officer, Angie Strome, said the absences will also help ease Todorovic’s anxiety at reintegrating society, noting the young woman has “grown up in prison.”last_img read more

  • Quebec restaurant ordered to reinstate waitress fired for allegedly not smiling

first_imgMONTREAL – A waitress dismissed for allegedly having a bad attitude and not smiling enough has been awarded $30,000 and must be given her job back, Quebec’s labour tribunal ruled.Caroline Daunais had been working at the Coco Frutti restaurant in Victoriaville, Que, for about six months when she was fired in April 2016, according to a decision released Jan. 29.Daunais filed a complaint to the tribunal, claiming she was fired after asking for back pay owed to her.In the official notice of her firing, the restaurant owner stated Daunais had disrespected her colleague by waiting on one of her tables. The owner told the tribunal, however, that Daunais was also let go “because of her bad attitude and for not smiling enough.”The restaurant owner added “everyone had problems with her” and with regards to back pay, the owner said she was the only person out of 35 employees who had complained. She was eventually given all the money owed to her, the judgement reads.Tribunal judge Christian Drolet didn’t recognize the restaurant’s excuse as serious, finding instead they used it as a pretext to terminate the only employee who asked for back pay — notably the day before she was fired. He added the plaintiff made reasonable efforts to minimize the damage by looking for another job.“There is no reason to conclude that a comparable job was available or that she unreasonably withheld an offer of employment that she should reasonably have accepted,” he wrote.Drolet ordered Coco Frutti to reinstate her, pay her $28,240 in lost wages, and about $2,000 in interest.last_img read more

  • Mothers Day Goat Yoga

It’s an unconventional way to celebrate Mother’s Day but many moms were treated today to an afternoon of goat yoga. Its like the traditional form of yoga, except with farm animals and many moms say they couldn’t have asked for a better way to spend Mother’s Day.In between the namastes and downward dogs were goats. It’s a little bit louder than normal peaceful yoga. The baby goats, some just four days old enjoyed hopping on people who were trying to get in a work out at small talk winery in Niagara on the Lake.Others were more relaxed and enjoyed lots of cuddles. While most moms are content with brunch, or flowers, these moms say goat yoga may be their new Mother’s Day tradition. It’s a goat free for all. That’s what makes it interesting.Melina Morsch, the owner of Fox Den Yoga, says despite the unpredictability of the goats, this is a great way to treat mom.“Its very interactive. You can see mom enjoying herself in a yoga class and watch mom just turn into a kid again as she experiences that energy of a baby goat.”Although it may seem chaotic, the instructor says the goats actually mimic your energy. So if your calm, the goats will be calm too. They echo back the energy of the group and it makes for a really interesting yogic experience.Goats or no goats, at the end of the day moms say they just want to be with their kids on Mother’s Day.It was a full circle Mother’s Day goat yoga experience as the mother goats were also there with their babies and in between classes were nursing their young. read more

  • Venus Serena Williams Open Olympics With Easy Wins

The Williams sisters, Venus and Serena Williams, started their path toward Olympic gold with pedestrian victories in their opening matches, generating chants of “U-S-A, U-S-A” from fans.Twenty minutes separated the victories by the American sisters. Venus Williams took care of Sara Errani, 6-3, 6-1 in a match during which she hardly was threatened. At the other end of the All  England Club, Serena Williams disposed of Poland’s Urzula Radwanska, 6-2, 6-3.A schedule backlog transformed the Olympics at Wimbledon into a parade of Grand Slam champions Monday, with the Williams sisters and Roger Federerall playing at the same time. And all won, Federer reaching the third round, beating Julien Benneteau of France, 6-2, 6-2.“I just wanted to play well for my country,” Venus Williams said. “It was just great to be out there.”She waited an extra day because of rain to begin her bid for a record fourth gold medal.Venus Williams, who is unseeded, drew a tough first-round foe in Errani, who has won four titles this year and is ranked a career-high No. 9. Williams served well, charged the net aggressively and appeared at ease on the Wimbledon grass, where she has won five of her seven Grand Slam titles.“I’ve been working really hard on my serve,” she said. “I really haven’t had my serve where I wanted it this year. But I definitely worked a lot on it, so that way it would be a real weapon for me, which is what I’m used to.”Despite being diagnosed last year with an autoimmune disease that can cause fatigue, she began 2012 determined to make the Olympic team. She won the gold in singles at the 2000 Games and teamed with Serena to take the gold in doubles in 2000 and 2008.Because her opening match was delayed a day by rain, Williams will have to play six consecutive days if she reaches Saturday’s final.“I definitely expect everything to be tough on me almost nowadays,” Williams said.Over on Court 1, Serena’s serve lacked its usual sizzle, and she was even broken once, but she still eliminated Radwanska with little drama.  She will next play Vera Zvonareva of Russia, the Wimbledon runner-up in 2010. read more

  • These Arent Your RegularSeason Cavs

The Cleveland Cavaliers that swept the top-seeded Toronto Raptors out of the postseason in dominant fashion looked completely different from the Cavs team that eked out 50 wins in the regular season. And with good reason: The bulk of Cleveland’s postseason minutes have gone to, quite literally, a different team. Through the first two rounds of the playoffs, the Cavaliers have leaned heavily on a five-man lineup that had never shared the court before. In the team’s series against the Pacers and Raptors, Cleveland’s most-used lineup has been George Hill, J.R. Smith, Kyle Korver, LeBron James and Kevin Love. So far this postseason, they’ve logged 110 minutes together. That’s 110 more than they played together in the regular season. Compared to the Toronto Raptors, whose most-used lineup in the playoffs1OG Anunoby, DeMar DeRozan, Serge Ibaka, Kyle Lowry and Jonas Valanciunas. logged 801 minutes together in the regular season, Cleveland looks like it’s experimenting on the fly. But it’s working. Cleveland’s most-used postseason lineup is outscoring opponents by 41 points, good for third-best in the playoffs. The Cavs’ second-most-used lineup this postseason, which features José Calderón in place of George Hill, is also without precedent. Cleveland is the only remaining team in the playoffs that has given more than 20 percent of its postseason minutes to a lineup that didn’t see any time together in the regular season.2Although it should be noted that only about half the total playoff field gave more than 20 percent of the team’s minutes to any one lineup of any description. In addition to the Cavs, the Raptors, Pelicans and Rockets have all leaned heavily on a single lineup.Midseason trades and injuries are the primary reasons for this. Right around the time Cleveland acquired George Hill at the trade deadline, Kevin Love missed 20 games with a fractured hand. By the time Love had returned from injury, J.R. Smith had been moved out of the starting lineup to run the team’s second unit. A short while later, Kyle Korver took a leave of absence to deal with a family issue and a nagging foot injury. The lineup had no opportunity for chemistry-building before the playoffs. And even then, George Hill missed three games during their series with the Pacers due to back spasms.Having Hill in the lineup unlocks a major component of Cleveland’s offense. Not only does it give the Cavs another person (besides James) to bring the ball up the court, it also allows Hill and Love to run a pick-and-roll that creates defensive mismatches that are easier to exploit than the mismatches created by the James and Love version of the pick-and-roll. After last night’s game, Love said in the postgame press conference, “And for me personally, setting a 1-5 pick-and-roll, that was something that I missed, especially in the first series when [Hill] was out with his back.”After Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, LeBron James was asked how happy he was with his team’s chemistry thus far. James noted that it was just their ninth game in the postseason together, but in some ways it was just the ninth game ever for this iteration of the Cavs.Of the seven remaining playoff teams, the Golden State Warriors are the only other club that has been using untested lineups. But now that Steph Curry has returned after rehabbing a knee injury, the Warriors are back to using lineups like the “Hamptons Five,” which they’ve featured throughout the last two seasons. How you view Tyronn Lue, Cleveland’s head coach, colors how you view his postseason lineups. If you think Lue is in over his head, you might believe that he’s making things up as he goes. But if you have more faith in his abilities, you might believe that this has been Lue’s plan the entire time. One piece of evidence in favor of the latter theory is that Lue hinted before the end of the regular season that he had something up his sleeve that he was saving for the playoffs. “We’ll probably do things we haven’t done all season when it comes to the playoffs, things we’ve been working on all year,” Lue told Cleveland.com.The playoffs are meant to be the culmination of everything that teams work on over the regular season. Coaches spend 82 games fine-tuning their schemes, rotations and lineups to find out what works and what doesn’t. By the time the playoffs arrive, there aren’t many stones left unturned. Which is why the way that Cleveland swept Toronto with an untested lineup is so surprising for the Cavaliers and so disappointing for the Raptors. In previous years, when people explained why the LeBron-led Cavaliers improved during the playoffs compared to the regular season, they usually chalked it up the to the team giving more effort — or flipping the proverbial switch. The difference this year is their lineups.Check out our latest NBA predictions. read more

  • Hollande tells Obama of deep disapproval over US spying

first_imgTHE UNITED STATES has become embroiled in a new row over its controversial spying programme as allies France and Mexico condemned revelations Washington tapped millions of phonecalls and hacked into leaders’ emails.French President Francois Hollande has expressed his “deep disapproval” of reports of US spying in a phone call with President Barack Obama.France’s Le Monde newspaper reported that the US National Security Agency had secretly monitored 70.3 million phone communications in France over 30 days from 10 December, 2012, to 8 January this year. The allegations, the latest from leaks by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, also marred a visit to Paris by US Secretary of State John Kerry, where he discussed moves to try to end the war in Syria.Former presidentAt the same time, German weekly Der Spiegel reported the NSA had also hacked into former Mexican president Felipe Calderon’s email account.Calderon, on Twitter, described the revelations as an “affront to the institutions of the country, given that it took place when I was president”.Hollande told Obama that the alleged practices were “unacceptable between friends and allies because they infringe on the privacy of French citizens”, the French leader’s office said in a statement. The allegations come on top of previous revelations by Snowden — who has sought safety in Russia as US authorities pursue him for leaking classified information — that the United States had a vast, secret programme called PRISM to monitor Internet users.French prosecutors are already investigating the programme, and French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said he was “deeply shocked” by the new revelations.“It’s incredible that an allied country like the United States at this point goes as far as spying on private communications that have no strategic justification, no justification on the basis of national defence,” he told journalists.John KerryKerry refused to comment on the specific accusations, but noted that Washington was reviewing its intelligence gathering operations following protests from allied governments. He also sought to defend the US position.“Protecting the security of our citizens in today’s world is a very complicated, very challenging task… because there are lots of people out there seeking to do harm to other people,” Kerry said at a press conference after meeting Arab League officials.“Lots of countries are engaged in the activity of trying to protect their citizens in the world,” he said. “Our goal is always to try to find the right balance between protecting the privacy and security of our citizens.”According to Le Monde, the spy agency automatically picked up communications from certain phone numbers in France and recorded certain text messages under a programme code-named “US-985D”.The French daily said the documents gave grounds to believe that the NSA targeted not only people suspected of being involved in terrorism but also high-profile individuals in business and politics.© AFPRead: Snowden insists Russia has no access to NSA files >Column : The drama surrounding Manning and Snowden is diverting attention from what matters >last_img read more

Le 8 novembre 2010 à 10:21 • Emmanuel Perrinlast_img read more

  • Scientists Solve the Mystery of Why Zebras Have Stripes

first_img Watch: Dolphin Leaps Feet Away From Unsuspecting SurferWatch: Deep-Sea Octopus ‘Billows Like a Circus Tent’ Stay on target Stripes are fashionable on humans, but it turns out the pattern serves a greater purpose for zebras: pest control. According to a new study, zebra’s stripes appear to confuse flies, discouraging them from landing for a quick bite. For the study, published Wednesday in the journal PLOS One, researchers camouflaged horses in “zebra costumes.” They found that horse flies gathered around domestic horses and zebras at a similar rate — but landed on zebras a quarter as often. When solid-colored horses were dressed in the “zebra coats” the flies made far fewer landings on the patterned areas, but still landed on the uncovered, non-striped head. With solid coats of brown or gray, “most mammals are pretty boring,” Tim Caro, who studies animal coloration at the University of California, Davis, and a co-author of the study, told the New York Times. “So when you see these bold patterns like on a giraffe or zebra, as a biologist you say, Why?”The team said the research not only supported previous work suggesting stripes might act to deter insects, which can carry diseases, but helped unpick why, revealing the patterns only produced an effect when the flies got close.Researcher investigate how horseflies behave around horses with ‘zebra coats’ for an an experiment led by UC Davis focused on why zebra stripes are so good at warding off flies. (Tim Caro/UC Davis)The study noted that zebras and horses respond very differently to the presence of flies. Zebras swish their tails almost continuously during the day to keep flies off; they stop feeding if bothered by them; and if the flies are particularly persistent, the zebras will run from them. Horses, on the other hand, primarily twitch and occasionally swish to ward off flies. As a result, any flies that actually contacted zebras were soon dislodged compared to horses. The study also showed stripes did not act as a long-range deterrent but appeared to “dazzle” the flies that got up close — possibly because of the flies’ low-resolution vision.“From distances of greater than two metres or so, a zebra would just look like a grey horse – they won’t be able to see the stripes at all,” Dr Martin How, co-author of the research, told the Guardian. He said it was likely the “sudden reveal” of the stripes on close approach either surprised the insects and made them veer off, or interfered with their perception of how fast objects were moving past them, affecting their ability to land. The study also showed stripes did not act as a long-range deterrent but appeared to “dazzle” the flies that got up clos. (Photo Credit: Digital Vision/Getty Images)For years, scientists have debated the function of the stripey animal print. Some researchers have said the stripes serves as camouflage to confuse big predators, an identity signal to other zebras, or even a kind of wearable air conditioner, according to the Times. Now most scientists agree that the function of a zebra’s stripes is to ward off biting flies.Researchers do not yet understand why zebras evolved these sophisticated defense mechanisms, according to a UC Davis statement. A possible explanation is zebras may be highly prone to infectious diseases carried by African biting flies, although that hypothesis requires further study.More on Geek.com:This ‘Virgin’ Stickleback Fish Mysteriously Fertilized Its Own EggsPhotos: London Zoo Shares Amazing Animal X-RaysScientists Solve the Mystery of the Cassowary’s Strange Headgearlast_img read more

The Tata Group already has two joint ventures in India — Vistara, with Singapore Airlines, and AirAsia India, in partnership with Malaysia’s AirAsia. The largest domestic carrier in terms of passengers flown is Indigo (market share of about 40 percent), followed by Jet Airways, Air India, SpiceJet, GoAir, and smaller players.Indian carriers flew flew 10 million passengers in May this year, up 17.3 percent from 8.66 million flown in the corresponding month last year, according to provisional data released by the civil aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). LIVE : #Cabinet Briefing by FM @arunjaitley at #PIB Press Conference Hall, Shastri Bhawanhttps://t.co/nT0YmszOUy— PIB India (@PIB_India) June 28, 2017 Air India had reported operating profit of Rs. 105 crore on total revenues of Rs. 20,526 crore for financial year 2015-16.The carrier’s debt stands close to Rs 50,000 crore after a series of fund infusion by the government. “To run Air India, you have invested Rs. 50,000 crore. That money is government’s money, that’s your money. It could have been used for school education,” Jaitley said during the interview to government-owned broadcaster Doordarshan last month, making a case for divestment.last_img read more

  • Ervin Sues to Get on the Ballot

first_imgBy Sean Yoes, Baltimore AFRO Editor, syoes@afro.comMaryland gubernatorial candidate Valerie Ervin has filed a lawsuit against the Maryland State Board of Elections to get the ticket of her and running mate Marisol Johnson on the ballot in time for the Democratic Primary on June 26.Maryland gubernatorial candidate Valerie Ervin (right) and running mate, Marisol Johnson (left). (Courtesy Photo)Ervin, who ascended to the top of the gubernatorial ticket once occupied by Kevin Kamenetz, who died suddenly of a cardiac arrest May 10, officially filed the lawsuit May 29.“There’s no basis for the State Administrator’s hasty announcement — it casts a wide shadow over the integrity of the election. Marylanders deserve a clear outcome the morning of June 27,” Ervin said in a statement. “The State Board must fulfill its legal obligation to not only ensure the integrity of the election, but also ensure the right to vote is protected.” Ervin was referring to the assertion by Donna Duncan, the Maryland Board of Elections assistant deputy, that it was too late to print new ballots and that the cost of $2 million would be prohibitive, according to a report by the Washington Post.“We clearly determined it was not possible to reprint the ballots,” Duncan said.Duncan also said any vote cast for Kamenetz would be counted for Ervin. The gubernatorial ticket of Ervin/Johnson is the first gubernatorial ticket in Maryland history with two women of color. Lamone said the Board has opted to post signs or notices at polling places around the state to notify voters to the change.Ervin’s lawyer, Mariana Cordier, who filed the suit in Anne Arundel County offered the official statement concerning the legal action according to the Ervin/Johnson campaign.“It affects the integrity of an election if the voters are not aware of or do not have accurate information as to who they can vote for — who they can ultimately choose,” Cordier told WTOP radio.last_img read more
